Headaches: Drinking Water May Prevent and Treat them

Water is an essential source of life, and many health problems occur in the body, which can be healed by drinking adequate amount of water. When a person gets headaches, it is very easy to reach for medication, but the counter drugs have side effects which are worse than the headache. Therefore it is preferable to look for some natural methods rather than a quick fix.

At such times during the pandemic, you should not overlook even a simple headache. You may think that coronavirus has nothing to do with it. In fact, there are a lot of factors related to COVID-19 that can cause a headache. Failing to stay hydrated is one among such factors.

Causes of Headaches

The headaches are caused in the human body due to emotional, structural, or chemical problems. It is beneficial to find the cause of headache instead of taking a painkiller to alleviate the headache. Painkillers only help to mask the symptoms of headache, and if they are taken for a long period of time in excess amounts, it can cause a lot of other health issues.


The major reason for the headache is dehydration. Most of the time, though, dehydration happens when you exercise a lot, or due to hot weather, or too much time gap in drinking liquids and fail to refill the water lost in the body. To treat your headache naturally with the help of water, first of all, you have to find out the type of headache you have.

Types of Headaches

  • There are chronic tension headaches which are caused due to physical problems, fatigue, psychological problems, depression, emotional issues, and stress overload.
  • There are cluster headaches which come in groups of one to three in a day in a fixed cluster period which could be days or months.
  • There are hormonal headaches which are similar to migraines in which they are affecting only one side of the head. These headaches are frequently accompanied by vomiting, sensitivity to noise or light, and nausea.
  • There are sinus headaches which are experienced after a cold or any other medical conditions.

Treatment of Headache

Water can be used as a treatment for all these headaches. As it is discussed above that tension headaches are caused due to fatigue, it is known that fatigue is a side effect caused due to dehydration. So the bottom line is that dehydration is the reason for fatigue, and fatigue is the reason for the headache. So, all you have to do it get hydrated. Tension headaches can also happen due to other reasons, so if they prevail after getting hydrated, it is preferable to seek a doctor.

Water can treat headaches, but it is necessary that the water is purified. Water purifiers should be used in every house to keep the water safe for drinking so that it is not contaminated. If the water gets contaminated then instead of healing headache, it will increase other issues for the body.

The experts recommended that men should drink 13 cups of water per day while women should drink 9 cups of water every day. On average, a person should consume at least 8 cups of water every day to remain hydrated and away from a headache.

Thus we can say that headache can be dealt with the help of drinking water, applying some natural remedies, and also avoiding caffeine. If you keep on consuming a good amount of water daily, then you won’t have to take pills for a headache. You should try different remedies and hold on to the one which suits your body and is helpful to your body.
